90-year-old man faces 2 months in prison for feeding the homeless

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A controversial Fort Lauderdale law is getting some backlash after a 90-year-old man was arrested for providing food to homeless people, WJXT reports.

Arnold Abbott is facing up to two months in prison for violating a city ordinance that outlaws groups from sharing food with the hungry.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler said he warned arrests were coming, but Abbott said he plans to take legal action.

“I’m going to have to go to court again to sue the city of Fort Lauderdale, the beautiful city,” Abbott told WJXT. “These are the poorest of the poor. They have nothing. Don’t have a roof over their head, and how could you turn them away?”

In 1999, Abbott successfully sued the city for not allowing him to feed homeless people on the beach.

Abbott said he will continue to feed the homeless. Although he said he doesn’t want…

Polar bear habitat update: what a difference a year makes to sea ice coverage in Canada!

polarbearscience

There is far more ice — and far more concentrated ice — in Canada this year than on this day last year. That’s good news for most polar bear populations.

[And, it turns out, more ice total this year on this date than there has been since 2001!]

I’ve made a composite 2014/2013 ice map for 4 November that tells the story (courtesy daily Canadian Ice Service sea ice maps).

This 2 Minute Video Will Inspire Anyone to Take a Stand Against Animal Cruelty | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

Although animal cruelty may not always be so easy to identify, in one way or another, we are constantly surrounded by it. Our favorite fast-food restaurants use catchy slogans and “tasty” burgers to mask their support of physically abusing cows before they are slaughtered. Childhood favorite attractions such as zoos, aquariums, and theme parks take advantage of colorful scenes and exotic animals in order to lure in guests who (unknowingly) support the misery of animals in captivity. The makeup brands, cleaning products, and even medicines we utilize on a daily basis could be supporting animal testing in laboratories nationwide.

In the eyes of Compassion in World Farming, enough is enough. In their new campaign titled “End the Cage Age,” the organization intends to end the use of caged rabbits in laboratory testing experiments. Every year, over 330 million rabbits are bred in Europe … that’s more than…

RUFFIN, N.C. — Joyce Lewis loves catching up and chatting with family and friends, and self-proclaimed herself as “old fashioned” when it comes to using the telephone.

She’s used to a phone bill from $80 to $90 per month with her AT&T U-verse account.

So imagine her surprise to receive her July home phone bill for $6,094.40.

“I thought, ‘Oh my goodness. This is a big mistake!’ We immediately canceled my credit card so the bill would not be paid and then we called AT&T. I have been trying to get it straight…
