The name Hippopotamus comes from the Ancient Greek ‘river horse’. They can sleep underwater and will automatically rise and breathe without waking. They are only territorial while in the water and the reproduction and birth occur in the water. Hippos bask on the shoreline and secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is actually a skin moistener and sunblock that may also provide protection against germs. They are one of the most aggressive creatures in the world, although they look chubby, they can easily outrun a human.
Our recent post about Morgan – now we have more photos from Danica.
We’ve just gotten another kitten, a sweet tripod ginger and white little boy which is totally blind in one eye and his other eye is not in good shape either. He might be about three months old and is skinny and weak, so the vet advised me (after a thorough examination) to feed him a high quality kitten food, give him vitamins and antibiotics and bring him back for a checkup in a week.
As soon as he gains some weight and starts feeling better, we’ll decide about his future operations. His left rear lower leg has obviously been amputated, but we don’t know why or when. The bigger problem is that the surgery was performed badly and unskillfully, his leg was cut in the totally wrong place and his stump has basically had the skin…

My goodness, if you were excited to hear that Dunkin Donuts will not offer almond milk, get ready to be even more thrilled! Starbuck has announced that they will start testing coconut milk in select markets. Starbucks has offered soy milk for a while now, but for people who are soy-free and dairy-free, coconut milk serves as a wonderful alternative to drinking coffee black (yuck!).
The chain decided on coconut milk, rather than almond milk in response to concern for consumers with nut allergies. Dairy-free alternatives are becoming quite the rage throughout coffee shops. A report from the company Mintel found that between 2011 and 2013, sales in non-dairy milk products have increased by 33 percent. That’s certainly something to celebrate!
While the number of stores that will offer coconut milk has not been released yet, it has been established that stores in Oregon, Los Angeles and Cleveland…

Russell Simmons has tip for anyone looking for some good karma: go vegan.
The ultra successful business magnate who also happens to be a vegan who practices meditation on a daily basis has lent his voice to a new PETA PSA encouraging others to go on a plant based diet.
“You see them on every corner, lurking, waiting to take your money for unhealthy products that can ruin your life and put you in the hospital. Fast-food restaurants are everywhere. You name ‘em, they’re selling products that can make you fat and unhealthy, products that are killing the environment and causing animal suffering on an unimaginable level,” says the Phat Farm owner on the 30 second spot. “Fight it. Do yourself a favor: Try vegan—you deserve it, our planet deserves it, the animals sure do. Vegan. Now that’s good karma. I’m Russell Simmons, for PETA.”
The public service announcement…

While ethical textiles are rare within the fashion industry — which is notorious for glamorizing leather, wool, fur, feathers, silk and so on — there were corners of Manhattan where life was respected during this installation of New York Fashion Week, with clothing, accessories and cuisine absent the standard speciesist ingredients.
Though the list of exclusively compassionate companies featured during NYFW is frustratingly finite, two contemporary fashion brands and one packaged food brand stand out from the static, supplying an antidote to the death-draped runways and cruelty-laden plates conscientious consumers are accustom to being repeatedly disappointed and bored by, season after season.
Enter Arden Wohl x Cri de Coeur, Brave GentleMan and Gardein. Representing, respectively, chic handbags and footwear for women; dapper menswear; and delicious plant protein, these three names the past several days delighted vegans and non-vegans alike, and are without a doubt paving the way for the future.
