In the world of animal agriculture, pigs, cows, and chickens are all turned into “things,” regarded as commodities for the sake of our profit. In order to justify treating animals in this manner, the people who “own” them have to mentally distance themselves from their actions and from the personalities and needs of the animals as well. But that’s not to say that some farmers don’t “wake up” and recognize that the animals they work with are someones, not somethings.
Take this former pig farmer, for example. After working with pigs for most of his career, a “lightbulb” went off and he came to realize that what he was doing to his pigs didn’t seem right.
