PETA Offers To Help Pay Water Bills For Struggling Detroit Residents — But Only If They Go Vegan

Stop Making Sense

Think Progress reports:

‘Detroit residents are struggling to pay their water bills at such an alarming rate that the city’s utility announced a few months ago that it would cut off water for between 1,500 and 3,000 people every week. The situation has gotten so bad that the United Nations has had to step in and tell the city that such massive water shut-offs are a violation of human rights. People are desperate just to keep their taps turned on, as about half the city has fallen behind on its bills. As a resident recently told ThinkProgress, “when half of the city can’t do something, it tells you it’s a systemic problem.”

Now, an unlikely group seems to think it can step in and solve this systemic problem. PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, announced in a blog post on Thursday that it will offer financial…

Animals and the Law: New York’s “Traveling Wild and Exotic Animal Protection Act”

The Paw Report

A proposed bill (Assembly A5407/Senate S5971) in New York State would restrict the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses and shows. It would add a new section to the New York Agriculture and Markets Law to restrict any “traveling circuses or show” from allowing the “participation of an exotic or wild animal, including a non-human primate, in an animal act if during the thirty day period preceding such participation, such animal was traveling in a mobile housing facility.”

“Exotic or wild animal” is defined here as to include: non-human primates, tigers, lions, wolves, bears, elephants, giraffes, camels, zebras, and certain other enumerated non-domesticated animals. This law would notinclude domesticated animals (dogs, cats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, donkeys, mules, and goats).

Pharmaceutical Roulette

Our Compass

By Stacey Larson

We are physiologically complex beings, a mystery in so many ways. But when we fall ill, we applaud the availability and ease of drugs and rarely study the warnings and potential interactions. Indeed, even with ineffective experiences or negative reactions, we drop dollar after dollar satisfying our seemingly-insatiable appetite for drugs, spending billions of dollars per year supporting our medical addiction. Our culture celebrates drugs; we see glossy advertisements promising the prevention of cancer and diseases and flirty commercials offering sexual youth and practically run to our doctors faster than they can enable our addiction with promises scribbled on pads. We take these drugs in faith, awaiting results that provide physical well-being. Some are grateful: the antibiotic medically necessary to cure potentially-lethal infections will have few critics. Some are satisfied: the drugs meant to create lala interludes may produce happy customers. And then there are…

Monsanto Ordered to Pay $93 Million to Small Town for Poisoning Citizens

Pushing Premarin: Big Pharma, Big Bucks — Part 3

Tuesday's Horse

Advertising: Exploiting the public for power and profit

Despite the controversy of PMU-derived HRT, these drugs bring in profits of over a billion dollars annually to Pfizer and it seems physicians who prescribe such drugs are indifferent to the risks associated with the radical hormone imbalances induced by these equine hormones. Their central mantra being “as long as it works”.

This returns us to the slick marketing tactics employed by Big Pharma and the disturbing nature of those strategies.

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertisements for prescription drugs on television and in print are intended to evoke the perception that these drugs are the panacea to your medical woes. This in turn generates consumer demand through illusion – side effects are typically deemphasized while benefits are central to getting the customer hooked.

DTC pharmaceutical advertising and marketing is currently only legal in the US and New Zealand and is…

Pushing Premarin: Big Pharma, Big Bucks — Part 2

Tuesday's Horse

Safety: Big Pharma, Bad Medicine

Premarin foals in feedlot. Premarin foals in feedlot.

Despite Pfizer’s aggressive marketing strategies, the sad fact is that these drugs derived from horse urine are the same drugs they always were – the drugs that took the lives of thousands of unsuspecting women and continue to exploit and abuse the PMU mares and their foals.

They have the same risks they have always had and the package warnings list even more risks than before as a result of Wyeth’s past indiscretions and failure to sufficiently warn the public of the dangers. Yet they’re deemed safer because of this very reason – make the consumer aware, we aren’t hiding anything – honest.

And, while it’s true that the “recommended” prescribed dosages may be lower along with guidelines that advise reducing the length of time a woman remains on HRT, in effect nothing has changed –…

Pushing Premarin: Big Pharma, Big Bucks — Part 1

Tuesday's Horse

Image: Don’t be fooled by the pretty flower. This drug is produced using pregnant mare’s urine. They removed the “equine” from “conjugated estrogens” long ago. Not good for marketing. Image:

It seems lately that everywhere you look there are ads for Premarin, Premarin Cream and the new kid on the block Duavee*, also derived from Pregnant Mare’s Urine.

These sinister advertisements have been materializing repeatedly in numerous US magazines and more recently as a TV ad on (

Pfizer seems intent on peddling these ghastly drugs and are busy infiltrating various media sources in an attempt to retain and grow a solid market share for these HRT therapies regardless of the inherent and proven risks they pose to menopausal women. This is by no means a mystery or surprise.

To start, Pfizer had a lackluster first quarter this fiscal year – a trend of enduring profit…

DiCaprio Raises $25 Million to Protect Environment | Ecorazzi

Life or Lunch?

leonardo-dicaprio1-600x450-1066x800Leonardo DiCaprio has friends in high places, which comes in handy when he’s trying to raise money to save the planet.

The award winning actor raised $25 million on Wednesday to protect the environment and endangered species.

The charity gala was held in the Riviera seaside resort of Saint-Tropez and the 500 guests, which included Academy award winner Marion Cotillard and soap star Joan Collins, paid between $7,000 and 130,000 to get in and participate in the auction for a good cause.

Before the bidding began, DiCaprio took the spotlight to explain just why raising funds was important. He reinforced the idea that the planet’s flora and animal species are being decimated at a rate not seen since the age of the dinosaurs.

The plea worked and among the biggest purchases were a Damien Hirst sculpture for $6 million by Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik and a Picasso drawing that…

Ted Nugent Blasts ‘Unclean Vermin’ After Native American Tribe Canceled His Show

Mr. Stinky Gas Bag… is a ugly old fart !!!!!!

The Fifth Column

Why do I even bother posting anything about this racist cretin?  Because he fits the tagline of this blog to a tee:  Sorting out the crazies

Ted Nugent lashed out after a native American tribe in Idaho cancelled his show over his history of racist remarks. “I take it as a badge of honor that such unclean vermin are upset by me and my positive energy,” Nugent told Gannett Wisconsin Media in reference to those opposed to his show. “Put your heart and soul into everything you do and nobody can stop you. Sometimes you give the world the best you got and you get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you got anyway.”

“By all indicators, I don’t think they actually qualify as people, but there has always been a lunatic fringe of hateful, rotten, dishonest people that hate happy, successful people,” Nugent said.

How this will help

Because they have picture after picture of killed, and skinned wolves. They are piled on top of each other. They even have a picture of a pile of burned wolves. FaceBook is no place for this type of violence. It is way beyond and above just a common hunting page. They have been reported over and over and Facebook still refuses to take them down. This page has to be shut down. Now it has been brought to my attention; this Horrible page is also getting peoples stuff off of their wall and posting it on the “kill all the wolves” wall and telling all of their followers…

The U.S. Navy is conducting exercises that could kill nearly 1,000 whales and other marine mammals during the next five years of testing and training with dangerous sonar and explosives. Thora Birch Calls for an End to Animal Cosmetics Testing

Cruelty-Free Beauty

I love when Cruelty Free International (and any anti-animal testing group) gets mainstream news media coverage. That usually happens when celebrities come out in support of the group. Recently, The Huffington Post Impact blog featured a story about actress Thora Birch (of American Beauty fame) supporting the work of Cruelty Free International and calling for the end of cosmetics testing on animals. Here’s an excerpt of what she says:

It is a shame that in the United States animals can still be subjected to agonizing tests for cosmetics despite the availability of modern non-animal tests. Testing cosmetics on animals is an outdated and unnecessary practice. It’s also cruel. Our nation’s largest trading partner, the European Union, has banned the sale of animal tested cosmetics and proven it is possible to produce safe cosmetics without harming animals.

For over a decade California has required that modern non-animal tests be used to…

Subotica petition

Dear all;

We ask you please to give your full support to the work being undertaken in Subotica by NGO’s to help solve the problem of un-sterilised owned and stray dogs.

As we always say, sterilization and identification marking of stray animals is the first step to long term numbers reduction.  Just as important is public education – that owned dogs need to be sterilized by their owners, and they should not turn unsterilized animals out onto the streets every day to reproduce with non sterilized stray / street animals.

It would take little to introduce a public education programme showing that owned animal sterilisation is so important to te long term reduction of stray animals on the streets – animals which suffer terribly.

Please give your support to the following campaign – the petition can be found below.

Thank you – SAV.

Patricia Randolph’s Madravenspeak: Doomsday climate scenario no longer far-fetched

Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic-Vote Our Wildlife

“Consider this. What if all life on earth could go extinct because of man-made climate change?” — “Last Hours” documentary

There is little, these days, that brings state power in line with the best interests of the public or the planet. Those in power devour Koch money for breakfast and deliver destruction of the planet all day long.  Concentrated corporate and special-interest power monetize what was sacred, and have taken over governments, including our own, cannibalizing the planet to exhaustion. This trajectory is accelerating such that this may be the last century of life on this planet. Each of the five former known extinctions eradicated more than half of life on earth. Several of them involved global warming.

Everyone should watch Thom Hartmann’s short “Last Hours, a preamble to a documentary in the works, covering the projections of how climate change will likely play out. Rather than a…
