Rep. Mike Pompeo will introduce legislation backed by powerful trade groups to prevent states from passing laws requiring the labeling of genetically-modified foods, according to reports. The bill is linked to biotech giant Monsanto and Koch Industries.

Pompeo will offer the bill in the US House before Congress leaves for Easter recess later this month, The Hill newspaper reported, citing industry sources. Politico also reported on the impending proposal. Pompeo’s office would not comment on the congressman’s intentions for a labeling restriction.

The bill includes a “prohibition against mandatory labeling,” according to The Hill, echoing powerful interest groups that have already declared war against such “right to know” labeling laws around the nation.

It was revealed in recent months that powerful farming and biotechnology interest groups like Monsanto were joining forces – under the name ‘Coalition for Safe Affordable…

Chinese J-20 stealth fighter incorporates F-35 secrets stolen from U.S.

Consortium of Defense Analysts

F-35 J-20

Bill Gertz reports for The Washington Free Beacon, March 13, 2014:

A cyber espionage operation by China seven years ago produced sensitive technology and aircraft secrets that were incorporated into the latest version of China’s new J-20 stealth fighter jet, according to U.S. officials and private defense analysts.

The Chinese cyber spying against the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II took place in 2007 under what U.S. intelligence agencies codenamed Operation Byzantine Hades, a large-scale, multi-year cyber program that targeted governments and industry.

Defense officials said the stolen data was obtained by a Chinese military unit called a Technical Reconnaissance Bureau in the Chengdu province. The data was then passed to the state-run Aviation Industry Corp. of China (AVIC).

An AVIC subsidiary, the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, used the stolen data in building the J-20, said defense and intelligence officials familiar with reports of the illicit tech transfer.

U.S. Navy Implicated in New Mass Stranding of Whales (Greece)

Demand the Navy to protect whales ~Please Sign Petition!!!

The ocean update

Ziphius_1-4-2014_SE_Crete_GreeceApril 2nd, 2014. Yesterday afternoon, while the U.S. and other navies played war games somewhere offshore, Cuvier’s beaked whales began stranding along the southern coast of Crete.  Those on the scene knew right away what they were dealing with, for yesterday’s strandings were only the most recent in a line of similar calamities in the region, going back two decades.  And in this case, as in the previous ones, all signs point navy.

Cuvier’s beaked whales are a remarkable species.  They have the deepest recorded dives of all marine mammals, some descending an astonishing 3000 meters below the water’s surface before coming up for air.  Favoring deep water, they don’t strand nearly as often as coastal species, and they don’t strand in number, and they don’t strand alive.

Yet that is exactly what happened yesterday.  Beginning around noon, three Cuvier’s beaked whales came ashore in one spot along…

Race to find and free entangled humpback whales (Hawaii, USA)

The ocean update

25169693_BG1April 5th, 2014 (Tannya Joaquin). HONOLULU – It’s the end of whale season, but whale watching continues for two humpbacks entangled in fishing line somewhere in Hawaiian waters.

It has been a busy winter for experts working to find and free distressed marine mammals.

The majestic humpback whales are a sight to behold, jumping for joy, during their winters in the Hawaiian islands. But, this season, 14 were spotted entangled in fishing line, fighting for their lives.

David Schofield, Response Coordinator for NOAA Fisheries says, “We sometimes see entanglements around the body, through the mouth, around the pectoral flipper and a lot along the flukes.”

Schofield coordinates response for distressed marine mammals, like an entangled humpback whale seen Monday off Kauai’s west coast with line wrapped tightly around its tail fluke.

“That is what we consider a life threatening injury” adds Schofield.

Stop Cornell University’s Violent Deer Killing
In Defense of Animals

For New York’s Cornell University, it is “deer management,” but for the rest of us it is the unnecessary and brutal killing of innocent deer. Cornell University’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been baiting and luring deer into live-capture clover traps, then using captive-bolt guns, which kill the deer by shooting a metal rod into each of their skulls. Terrified deer have had to endure overnight capture in sub-freezing temperatures before being killed.

Fawns suffocate and die in the womb when their mothers are slaughtered.

Being flight animals, once deer are caught in traps, they often thrash wildly and cry out in fear. Their panicked movements only increase and their cries become even more desperate once their killers arrive. This technique of netting and bolting deer is widely condemned by veterinary experts and humane societies for its egregious cruelty. Faculty and…

You Won’t Believe It’s Not Meat – MFA Blog

Life or Lunch?

120726_TECH_FAKEMEAT1.jpg.CROP.rectangle3-large-thumb-210x127 An article published by the  New York Times  highlights the growing market for delicious, plant-based meat alternatives and the companies who are taking meatless meats to a new level.

As people increasingly move away from fat- and cholesterol-laden animal products, more food producers are satisfying their customers’ demands for sustainable, compassionate foods and creating cruelty-free alternatives to traditional American fare.

Venture capitalists have begun funding environmentally conscious, animal-friendly food startups in the hopes of saving the planet’s dwindling resources.

The article explains: “Demand for meat alternatives is growing, fueled by trends as varied as increased vegetarianism and concerns over the impact of industrial-scale animal husbandry on the environment. The trend has also attracted a host of unlikely investors, including Biz Stone and Evan Williams of Twitter, Bill Gates and, most recently, Li Ka-shing, the Hong Kong magnate.”

Companies are offering meat alternatives with a texture and taste virtually indistinguishable from…

American Tax Dollars Shamelessly Wasted by the Feds

Click on image to view videoClick on image to view video

The U.S. government just rounded up 41 wild horses that were roaming public land and shipped 37 of them off to a Canadian slaughterhouse.  4 young foals were rescued are now under the care of a veterinarian in Colorado.

Over 50,000+ are now under government control.  Many of them are being held in holding pens in the American Mid-West.

Critics say this latest roundup was illegal.  The Bureau of Land Management says “regarding the 41 unauthorized domestic horses…The Bureau of Land Management had no authority over these animals under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act other than their removal.”  But the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act clearly states “‘wild free-roaming horses and burros’ means all unbranded and unclaimed horses and burros on public…

PETA PETITION: Stop Militaries’ World War on Animals!

STOP ANIMAL ABUSE

More than 80 percent of NATO nations have confirmed to PETA that they do not use any animals for military medical training exercises—including Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey.

This is clear evidence that there is no need to harm animals to prepare military medical personnel to save lives.

Only five NATO nations—Canada, Denmark, Norway, the U.S., and the U.K.—continue to use animals in these barbaric exercises. The Canadian military cuts apart and poisons live pigs with toxic chemicals, the military of Norway shoots live pigs with high-velocity bullets and inflicts numerous life-threatening injuries and bone fractures, and the military of Denmark—with participation from the U.K. Ministry of Defence—subjects live pigs to horrific bullet and blast wounds. The U.S. military stabs, shoots, dismembers, burns, and…

Hackers have broken into the websites of banks, news outlets, social media, and the government, but could key information on the whereabouts of endangered species be targeted as well?

Possibly, say conservationists: An incident in India has some concerned that wildlife poachers could use the Internet as another resource for criminal activity.

In July, Krishnamurthy Ramesh, head of the monitoring program at Panna Tiger Reserve in central India, received an email that alerted him to an attempt to access his professional email account. His inbox contained the encrypted geographic location of an endangered Bengal tiger. (See a National Geographic magazine interactive of big cats in danger.)

The tiger, a two-and-a-half-year-old male, had been fitted with a nearly $5,000 collar…

Michigan Cops to Track Cell Phone Calls with Military Hardware

Nwo Report

"We aren't the CIA, NSA and FBI. We are a local law enforcement agency doing a damn good job of keeping the community safe," police argue. Photo: John Fingas

Police in Oakland County, Michigan, will soon use a Hailstorm device to track cell phone calls. The secret device is manufactured by Harris Corp., a Florida-based international telecommunications equipment company and military contractor.

“It’s all very secretive and information about (Stingray and Hailstorm) is tightly controlled, which makes it (difficult) to have a broad discussion about these tools,” Alan Butler, a lawyer for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told the Detroit News.

In 2011, use of the Stingray, considered the most widely used surveillance device by government to track cell phones, was questioned during an Arizona court case. The Department of Justice issued a memorandum at the time admitting use of the device constituted “a Fourth Amendment search and seizure.”

Police in Florida and California are using the Stingray to track cell phone calls. It is also used by the FBI, DEA, BATF, Secret Service and Immigration and…
