Fact Attack: Endangered Species No. 110 – Przewalski’s Horse

Mungai and the Goa Constrictor

Przewalski's horses - Credit Patricia D Moehlman - IUCN

“A horse is a thing of such beauty. . .none will tire of looking at him as long as he displays himself in his splendor”
Xenophon

Przewalski's Horse By the early part of the twentieth century, huge numbers of Przewalski’s foals had been captured by exotic animal traders, the most going to a German merchant named Carl Hagenbeck. They were shipped to Asian and European zoos and private collectors. The horse had been described by Colonel Nikolai Mikhaylovich Przewalski,  a Russian geographer, only twenty years earlier. Once word was out, they all wanted one.

Carl Hagenbeck, almost single-handedly, managed to decimate most of the herds of the world’s only extant species of truly wild horse.  Although Przewalski’s horse had been over-hunted for centuries, the species had never before experienced this sort of devastation. Very few foals survived capture and the arduous journeys they were forced to make. And the methods…

Danish zoo at heart of giraffe uproar kills 4 lions

Global News

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – A Danish zoo that faced protests for killing a healthy giraffe to prevent inbreeding says it has put down four lions, including two cubs, to make room for a new male lion.

Citing the “pride’s natural structure and behaviour,” the Copenhagen Zoo said Tuesday that two old lions had been euthanized as part of a generational shift. It said the cubs were also put down because they were not old enough to fend for themselves and “anyway would have been killed by the new male lion.”

Zoo officials hope the new male and two females born in 2012 will form the nucleus of a new pride.

Last month the zoo triggered a wave of protests by killing a 2-year-old giraffe, and feeding its remains to the lions as visitors watched.

Alternatives to drugs made with pregnant mare’s urine

Tuesday's Horse

BY JANE ALLIN

As part of of the The Horse Fund’s campaign against the manufacture and use of the Premarin family of drugs – Premarin, Prempro and Duavee – we have compiled a list of alternatives to drugs made with pregnant mare’s urine (conjugated equine estrogens).

We encourage you to go online to further acquaint yourself with the effectiveness and safety of these compounds. There is a wealth of information out there, but beware of false claims and err on the side of caution.

And, as always, please consult with your doctor before you use these or any other alternatives for the relief of menopausal symptoms.

Probably the simplest and most natural approach to the treatment of menopause is to adopt a healthy lifestyle in regard to diet, exercise and stress management. Not only will this help alleviate symptoms but the benefits will ensure that you remain healthy now and…

Shocking! Danish zoo who shot a girafon does it again with Lion cubs!!! The two cubs, aged 10 months, were euthanized because “they were not old enough to fend for themselves.”

boldcorsicanflame's Blog

Notorious for not only killed a baby giraffe, but for having butchered in front of children, the Copenhagen Zoo is likely to attract the wrath of animal rights defenders again after ending the days of two lions and two cubs.

Zoo officials explain that the two older animals were slaughtered “because of the behavior (…) natural after nobody wanted them back. The two cubs, aged 10 months, were euthanized because “they were not old enough to fend for themselves.”

In a few days, a new male will indeed be presented to the two lions born in 2012 in the zoo today in reproductive age. “[The cubs] were killed by the new male as soon as he would have had the opportunity , they said to justify their decision.Unlike girafon Marius, there was no this time of dissection in public because “all our animals are not cut” to visitors, they said.

Galveston Oil Spill Threatening Crucial Bird Refuge

Eco Books 4 Kids

An oil containment boom cuts across a sandbar covered with birds on Pelican Island near Galveston, Texas.

A barge that spilled 168,000 gallons (635,000 liters) of oil Saturday into Galveston Bay is threatening a refuge that’s crucial habitat for thousands of birds, experts say.

The spill occurred when the barge collided with a ship in the Houston Ship Channel near Texas City, on the western coast of Galveston Bay.

The area is about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the Bolivar Peninsula, which is home to the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, a preserved area of marshy mudflats that’s home to a variety of geese, ducks, herons, and other waterbirds.

The sanctuary has been designated by bird-advocacy organizations as a Globally Significant Important Bird Area and is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.

The government’s cleanup efforts began immediately, with 24 response vessels working to skim the oil…

Georgia Governor Expected To Sign ‘The Most Extreme Gun Bill In America’

The Fifth Column

Concealed Carry

While  reading the following article, my mind did a fast-forward slide show in which I could see headlines of mass killings in Clubs, Bars, Movie theaters, and worse.  What the hell is wrong with these people?  I truly hope someone convinces the Governor just how insane this bill is…

(Writing a letter to Gov. Deal after I publish this.)

Think Progress

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) is expected to sign a bill that even the National Rifle Association is calling the most “comprehensive gun bill” in recent state history. It allows guns in bars, nightclubs, and government buildings without security checkpoints such as libraries. It eliminates criminal charges for those who accidentally bring their guns to the airport or other secured buildings where guns are prohibited. It even expands the state’s Stand Your Ground provision to allow felons to invoke the defense, and allows guns in public schools by authorized teachers and administrators.

Girl shaves head to support friend with cancer, gets banned from school

Global News

TORONTO – A 9-year-old girl was barred from a Colorado school for violating its dress code after she shaved her head in support of a friend who is battling cancer.

Kamryn Renfro decided to give herself a makeover in support her friend Delaney Clements, who recently lost her hair from chemotherapy treatments.

“I did it so she didn’t have to feel left out,” Renfro told Colorado’s NewsChannel5.

When Renfro returned to school Monday, she was told having a shaved head is in violation of the school’s dress code.

“I didn’t realize that hair was such an important aspect of a child at school,” Clements’ mom Wendy Campbell told NBC News9.

The NBC affiliate obtained a statement addressing the dress code policy.

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy…

I Believe in Fur

rants, raves, and rambles

IMG_7566

As a Northerner, I am rarely surprised by any of the things that might surprise southerners, but I was with my mother last weekend in Fairbanks Alaska… and she’s from “outside”.   We watched the GCI Open North American Championship Dog Sled Races… my mom was so excited, snapping picture after picture. I live in the Yukon, so dogsled races are an annual event. The Yukon Quest is our annual event…a 1,000 mile sled dog race run each February between Fairbanks and Whitehorse. Dog teams are really cool, but not once-in-a-lifetime cool.

What really captured my attention was the Alaska Trappers Association’s outdoor Fur Auction. Wow. Row after row of pelts, some tanned and some ready to be tanned. I found it fascinating; exciting. My mother found it repulsive, upsetting, anachronistic. There were wolf, Arctic fox, red fox, wolverine, ermine, weasel, coyote, lynx, beaver, squirrel, caribou, even a few bear. Although the sale…

Sweden Goes Vegan – MFA Blog

Life or Lunch?

Pass the Swedish fish! A recent post by “The Local”, a Swedish news publication, highlights the rising number of vegetarians in Sweden. Nearly 10% of the country now identifies as vegetarian or vegan, with young people leading the way.

According to a recent poll conducted by Animal Rights Sweden, in the last 5 years, the number of Swedish vegetarians has increased by 4%.

The article goes further, explaining that “37 percent of non-vegetarian respondents said their interest for buying vegetarian food had increased over the past year,” and “the increased demand for vegetarian food was ‘noticeable everywhere'”.

It should come as no surprise that growing numbers of people are embracing veganism – it’s better for our health, the environment and the animals. In fact, these same motivators are largely responsible for the over 12 percent drop in American meat consumption since 2007.

Pitbulls

5 minutes more please

20140325-205604.jpg

I get really disappointed when I hear people talk so negatively about Pitbull terriers. You hear so many horrible comments. In many places Pitbulls are classified as a dangerous breed and are in fact illegal to own.

But is it really the breed of dog or the people who own these dogs that are responsible for the negative image?

I honestly do not believe that any breed of dog is dangerous. If an animal is treated with respect, kindness and love it will become a gentle loving sole. The same goes for every other animal on this planet including humans.

I love these images which I found on both Pintrest and Facebook, I think they capture how I feel about this perfectly.

March 24th, 2014 (Zoë Robert). North American seafood company High Liner Foods announced last week that it would not purchase products sourced from Icelandic companies linked to whaling.

The Whales Need US (WNUS) coalition said in a press release that it had written to dozens of major U.S. wholesalers and retailers that source Icelandic seafood ahead of the largest seafood trade event in North America, the Seafood Expo North America, which concluded last week. The companies were urged to audit their supply chain in order to reassure the public that they are not buying fish from companies linked to whaling, in particular HB Grandi, Iceland’s largest seafood company. The managing director of Hvalur hf., Kristján Loftsson, is also chairman of the board of HB Grandi.

Stop Militaries’ World War on Animals!

GarryRogers Nature Conservation

Only five NATO nations—Canada, Denmark, Norway, the U.S., and the U.K.—continue to use animals in these barbaric exercises. The Canadian military cuts apart and poisons live pigs with toxic chemicals, the military of Norway shoots live pigs with high-velocity bullets and inflicts numerous life-threatening injuries and bone fractures, and the military of Denmark—with participation from the U.K. Ministry of Defence—subjects live pigs to horrific bullet and blast wounds. The U.S. military stabs, shoots, dismembers, burns, and kills thousands of animals . . . .

SeaWorld celebrates 50 years of non-stop sucking

Grist

If 50 is considered over the hill, then here’s hoping SeaWorld will continue rolling down the hill and into the ocean, where it will sink and never be discovered. Oops, was that harsh?

We’re actually psyched that SeaWorld turned 50 on Friday. Thrilled. After all, the timing is perfect for a midlife crisis. SeaWorld could take this landmark birthday as a chance to increase its marine mammal rescue contributions to, who knows, more than 0.0006 percent of its revenue. Perhaps with its newly minted senior discount, SeaWorld can purchase a clue: The people have watched Blackfish, and we are pissed.

Writes Nathan Crabbe of The Gainesville Sun:
