Students help raise money for local animal shelter

WINNIPEG — Dozens of students helped raise thousands of dollars for the Winnipeg Humane Society on Sunday.

The students, part of the Creative Communications program at Red River College, hosted a nine-hour telethon live on Shaw TV as part of their live television course.

The class of 37 worked for weeks preparing stories and segments to air during the telethon and also worked behind the scenes directing, using cameras, answering phones and hosting the event.

“I think they get really stressed and nervous but excited until the day of, and then everything fits into place and it becomes this machine and they love it,” said broadcast journalism instructor Joanne Kelly. “Some of them say it’s the best experience they had.”

This is the third year the college students have put on the event, which brings in much-needed funds for the humane society.
