Signs of Recovery in the White-Nose Scourge

strange behaviors

0509a-batfungus-50pThe first time white-nose syndrome really hit Aeolus Cave, on the side of a mountain in Dorset, Vt., the carcasses littered the entrance like a carpet. “You couldn’t step on the ground without stepping on dead bats,” says Scott Darling, a biologist with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. “Nowhere else have people seen that level of mortality in a cave.”

Bats afflicted with the fungus during their hibernation usually “fly out and die on the landscape,” unnoticed. But “in Aeolus Cave, for whatever reason, many, many died right there in Guano Hall,” the steeply sloped tunnel-like cave entrance. Statewide, Vermont lost 90 percent of its bats during the first few years of the epidemic, from 2008 to 2010. The other 19 states and five Canadian provinces where white-nose occurs have suffered a similar rate of loss. It may be the most precipitous decline in any animal group ever, with…

Why Ag-Gag Laws Are a Threat to Us All | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

When the exposure of animal cruelty becomes a crime, our legal system is failing us. Ag-gag laws criminalize the recording of animal abuse on factory farms, and each law is slightly different in its language. Currently, Idaho is the most recent state to pass an ag-gag law, and similar laws exist in Iowa, Utah, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, and Kansas, as reported by Animal Visuals.

I’ve written before about how backwards it is to punish those who expose animal cruelty, rather than those who perform the animal cruelty. It’s almost unthinkable. When these cases are carried out, such as the recent charges brought (then eventually dropped) against undercover investigator Taylor Radig, the public’s outrage can be felt.

The Agricultural Law blog puts it best. They write, “Do producers and processors really want their message to be –  ‘yes, all these illegal activities are going on, but the problem…

Deadly Driftnets Will Not Be Expanded Into Sea Turtle, Whale Habitat Off California Coast (USA)

The ocean update

NOAA/Obtained by NOAA/Obtained by

March 13rd, 2014. SACRAMENTO, Calif.— In an important victory for wildlife, federal fishery managers in Sacramento today decided not to expand driftnet fishing into protected sea turtle habitat along the California coast because it would significantly raise the risk of capturing and drowning endangered sea turtles and sperm whales. Instead the Pacific Fishery Management Council called for immediate action to impose strong whale-protection regulations on the driftnet fleet that expired in January 2014 and to test lower bycatch fishing gears for catching swordfish. But it took no action on ending the use of driftnets along the California coast.

“Finally, sea turtles and whales are getting a little help, instead of more fishing threats,” said Teri Shore, program director at Turtle Island Restoration Network. “Yet the driftnets will still be out on the water as usual this year, needlessly capturing and killing ocean wildlife. After decades of this…

Sailor who kissed a nurse in famous WWII photograph dies … aged 86!

It Is What It Is

~~March 15, 2014~~

The Navy veteran who was famously caught mid-kiss in Times Square after coming home from World War II, 86-year-old Glenn McDuffie, has passed away at the age of 86. McDuffie was only identified as the man in the photo a few years ago when he came forward after several other men claimed to be the sailor.

~~Glenn McDuffie~~

McDuffie said he was in the process of changing trains on August 14, 1945 when he heard that the Japanese had surrendered. Then he ran out into the street and saw the nurse. “She was standing out there in the middle of the street and she turned around and did like that, and I swear I went over there and kissed her,” he once said. He spent the years after the war as a mail carrier and semi-professional baseball player.

Rescued Labrador retriever ‘Manny’ dies in his sleep

Manny died in his sleep early Friday morningA Purposeful Rescue

March 14, 2014

Frightened, shaking senior dog, Manny who was rescued by A Purposeful Rescue because his former owner thought the dog was too old, quietly passed away at his foster home early Friday morning.

Not even a day ago, Manny left the Lancaster, Calif. county shelter by the front door with his foster mommy; his tail wagging, and even a tiny bounce to his step.

No sooner did he arrive at his foster home, Manny headed right to the dog bed and fell asleep. On Friday morning, Manny was to be examined by a veterinarian, receive a bath, and enjoy a good brushing.

Sadly, that didn’t happen. Instead, a statement from the Facebook page of A Purposeful Rescue announced the following news:

“I don’t even know how to write this as it breaks my heart on so…

‘Pirated’ Boeing 777 may return to skies as stealth nuclear weapon

Flight 370 passengers may still be alive

Natural News
March 15, 2014

Exclusive investigation: The 239 people on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 may still be alive. This stunning realization is now supported by considerable emerging evidence detailed in this article. At the same time, the “vanished” Boeing 777 may also be in a hanger in Iran right now, being retrofitted with nuclear weapons and turned into a suicide bomb to be deployed over a major city in the Middle East. This possibility is discussed in detail, below, with supporting evidence.

The idea that Flight 370 passengers and crew may still be alive is not a bizarre theory. Even Reuters is now reporting that U.S. authorities have stated, “…it’s also possible the plane may have landed somewhere.”

Here’s the evidence in support of this emerging “piracy” theory of what may have happened…

Petition to ‘stop SeaWorld from imprisoning whales for profit’ passes 200,000 signatures
A petition to make it illegal for Californian marine parks or zoos to use orca whales for entertainment purposes has gathered 200,000 signatures.
The campaign, which focuses on US chain SeaWorld, reached the milestone on Sunday morning….
It follows proposals from California state legislator Richard Bloom, who introduced the Orca Welfare and Safety Act in Santa Monica on Friday.
“There is no justification for the continued captive display of orcas for entertainment purposes”, Bloom said in a statement.
“These beautiful creatures are much too large and far too intelligent to be confined in small, concrete pens for their entire lives. It is time to end the practice of keeping orcas captive for human amusement.”
The petition…

Please OPPOSE the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Bills

Our Compass

Please click HERE to take action

Background Source IDA

Last week, we asked some of you to contact your U.S. Senators to ask that they oppose the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Bills. This week, we need every U.S. citizen to call and send a letter to both of your US Senators to help protect wildlife and public lands from those who enjoy killing wild animals including hunters, anglers, and trappers.

Two bills, the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2014 (S. 1996) and the Sportsmen’s Act (S. 1335), are currently pending in the Senate, while the latter has already passed the House.

The goal of this package of bills, collectively called SHARE (Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreation Act), is to further “sportsmen’s” interests. The bills have provisions that, if passed, would open more federal land to hunting, fishing, and trapping, allow the importation of polar bear “trophies” from…
