Lemurs have captured the public imagination in movies such as “Madagascar,” but now these adorable primates are on the brink of extinction, conservationists say.
Nineteen lemur conservationists and researchers published a call-for-action to save Madagascar’s 101 lemur species from the threats of deforestation and poaching stemming from the country’s political woes.
“Since the 2009 political crisis, the situation on the ground has been grim for the Malagasy people, but also for the lemurs, especially in terms of habitat loss. If things don’t turn around, lemur extinctions will start happening,” Mitch Irwin, an anthropologist at Northern Illinois University said in a statement. Irwin was one of the authors of the article detailed in the Feb. 21 issue of the journal Science. [Wild Madagascar: Photos Reveal Island’s Amazing Lemurs]

List of Mammals Extinct after 1500 AD

September 23, 2007 in Environment

The table below shows the complete list of mammal species classed as extinct since 1500 AD (the past 500 years). Subspecies are included at the end of the table. The data comes from the 2008 Red List of threatened species maintained by the World Conservation Union — also known as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It’s possible that other mammal species became extinct during that period without their disappearance having been recorded. The rate of extinction for all animals has increased in recent centuries.

There are 247 Critically Endangered mammals in the 2008 database — 188 mammal species and 59 subspecies. Just one example is the Baiji dolphin, or Yangtze river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer). The database entry states: “The preponderance of evidence indicates that the baiji is very close to extinction or may already be…

Palm Oil Plantations Allegedly Poison Seven Critically Endangered Sumatran Elephants

Ann Novek( Luure)--With the Sky as the Ceiling and the Heart Outdoors

Wildlife officials suspect foul play in the deaths of seven Sumatran elephants on the outskirts of Tesso Nilo National Park. Officials stumbled on the corpses of one female elephant, five young males, and one male calf in mid-February. Although the males had their tusks hacked off, the officials suspect the elephant were poisoned in revenge for disturbing illegal palm oil plantations inside the park.
“There is an indication that they were poisoned,” Muhammad Zanir, head of the local wildlife agency, told the AFP. “Some people may consider the elephants a threat to their palm oil plantations and poison them.”
Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, with populations decimated by the massive deforestation that has transformed the Indonesian island over the last couple decades. In recent years, Sumatran elephants are also falling victim to mass-poisonings, allegedly undertaken by some palm…

Downright cruel says breast cancer sufferer about Prempro, Pfizer

Tuesday's Horse

“I took these hormones [Prempro] for my change of life and had my first breast cancer in 2002 & my other one in 2007. Both breasts were removed. My lawyer threw us women under the bus and settled with Pfizer. The lawyers made out like a fat rat while we all ended up with very little. In the meantime the animals are the ones who have to suffer because of the pharmaceutical companies. It’s downright cruel.”

I recently received the above quote in an email concerning the drug Prempro. The lady wrote it in confidence, but gave me permission to use it in a post to help raise awareness.

Premarin is the commercial name for a hormone replacement therapy drug used for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. It consists primarily of conjugated equine estrogens. Isolated from pregnant mares’ urine, it is manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (part of…

Premarin: The horses, the drugs, the women

Tuesday's Horse

Premarin-Expendable Artwork with Woman, Mare and Foal Click to view full size. Free to use.

Premarin mares are large bred horses such as Belgian—Quarter Horses crosses, prized for their large bladders.

For most of their 11-month pregnancies, these horses are confined to stalls so small that they cannot turn around or take more than one step in any direction.

The mares must wear rubber urine-collection bags at all times which causes chafing and lesions.

The mares are taken off the pee line a couple of months before they foal.

Once the foals are born, the mares are re-impregnated; this cycle continues for about 12 years.

Sadly, the foals born to these mares are usually worth less than the urine their mothers produce. To the PMU farmers, they are worth more dead than alive.

Just as the male calves born to dairy cows are considered to be a byproduct of the dairy industry, the foals of…

New scam targets Netflix subscribers

The Fifth Column

Atlanta Journal Constitution

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you’re on the hit list of cyber-criminals who want into your wallet!

Huffington Post reports some subscribers are being hit with a pop-up phony webpage that looks exactly like Netflix.

When you enter your account info to sign in, you get a message that says, “We have detected unusual activity on this account. To Protect your account for unauthorized use, we have temporarily suspended this username. To regain access to your account please contact Member Services at 1-800-947-6570.”

I should note that the real Netflix customer service number is 1-866-579-7172.

If you call the fake customer service number, you’re told to download special software that is a Trojan virus. It allows the criminals to take over your computer and look for sensitive financial info on it.

Netflix has become so popular that it’s now a big target for crooks. Be very careful…

Fact Attack: Endangered Species No. 108 – Grévy’s Zebra

Mungai and the Goa Constrictor

Grevy's zebra

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself”
William Blake

Grevy's zebra running with giraffeHow sad it would be to lose the unique Grévy’s zebra from the plains of Africa. It is the rarest and most endangered of all species of zebra, and no other African mammal has seen such dramatic reductions in range as Grévy’s zebra has in recent decades. Being driven from its home by pastoral farmers after being forced to compete with cattle and goats for food and water has been one of the major problems the animals have had to face. Over-grazing has left the land severely degraded.

Furthermore, irrigation schemes surrounding the Ewaso Ng’iro River have seriously…

Habitat for Jaguars in the United States Protected

Areas are Key to Reestablishing Rare Cats in the U.S.

Washington, DC – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at last protected habitat deemed essential for the survival and recovery of the jaguar in the United States. The long-awaited rule designates 764,207 acres in Arizona and New Mexico as “critical habitat” for the imperiled cat. The jaguar was listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) throughout its range in 1972, and listed explicitly in the United States in 1997.
