Today, I have a very special guest speaking with me over the phone. His name is Dr. Hubert Karreman, and he is the veterinarian at the Rodale Institute. The Rodale Institute was founded in 1947 by organic pioneer J.I. Rodale to study the link between healthy soil, healthy food and healthy people.

Before he joined Rodale, Dr. Karreman founded Bovinity Health, a small company that provides natural veterinary products for large animal medicine. He also founded his own solo practice, Penn Dutch Cow Care, which he operated for 15 years as a holistic large animal practitioner.

Dr. Karreman now works primarily with certified organic dairy farmers as a consultant. He also lectures widely on natural treatment options for cows, which is the topic of our discussion today.

When is a Rescue Not a Rescue?

Dogpaddling Through Life

No one wants to buy from a puppy mill. But did you know that you could be even if you adopt?

That’s right! The Don’t Shop, Adoptcampaign has been so successful that some puppy mills are getting sneaky and setting up their own “rescues.”

What? Are you kidding me? What? Are you kidding me?

Oh, they look good.

They hold adoption events. They contract with a vet to provide care for the animals. Some even have 501(3)(c) status.

But all they’re really doing is “adopting” out the older puppies that weren’t sold. They’re not lying when they say the animals were removed from a puppy mill. They just don’t tell you THEY run the puppy mill.

Other so-called rescues are run by brokers who buy the puppies from the breeders, then turn around and “adopt” them out.

And they’re not just “adopting” out animals at the same rates they would have sold them for, they’re…

The origin of recently established red fox populations in the contiguous United States: translocations or natural range expansions?

Between Thorn Bushes and Claws

European Red Fox (Slovenia)

STATHAM, M. J., B. N. SACKS, K. B. AUBRY, J. D. PERRINE, AND S. M. WISELY

Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are native to boreal and western montane portions of North America but their origins are unknown in many lowland areas of the United States. Red foxes were historically absent from much of the East Coast at the time of European settlement and did not become common until the mid-1800s. Some early naturalists described an apparent southward expansion of native foxes that coincided with anthropogenic habitat changes in the region.

Alternatively, red foxes introduced from Europe during Colonial times may have become established in the east and subsequently expanded their range westward. The red fox also was absent historically from most lowland areas of the western United States. Extant populations of red foxes in those areas are considered to have arisen from intentional introductions from the east (and by extension are…

Capture of wild horses in Alberta likely to meet 10% of target

CALGARY — Alberta is likely to fall well short of its goal to reduce its wild horse population by almost 200 animals when permits expire at the end of the week.

Two licences were issued by the government to capture up to 196 feral horses in the central Alberta area around Sundre. One of the licence-holders says the actual number will probably be around 20.

The permits are in effect until March 1.

“The maximum number of feral horses that can be captured is still 196. I’m not aware of an intention to extend the capture season at this point,” Carrie Sancartier, a spokeswoman for Alberta Environment, said in an email Wednesday.

“I’ve just caught a few so far,” said Bryn Thiessen, 54, who runs Helmer Creek Ranch near Sundre and has one of the…

Rumors of a historic winter storm next week are a HOAX. Spread the word.

via   Rumors of a historic winter storm next week are a HOAX. Spread the word. .

byweatherdude

There’s rampant speculation around social media right now that there’s going to be a historic, blockbuster winter storm that affect over two-thirds of the United States east of the Rockies next week. It is a hoax. There will not be a “historic” winter storm next week. They don’t even hint at a sizable storm in the long range.

The hoax is being perpetrated by an infamous conspiracy theory website called “The Weather Space,” run by a man named Kevin Martin. K-Mart is a fake “meteorologist” who thrives on creating hoax weather forecasts in order to drive page hits to his website for ad revenue, and it also serves to try to destroy the credibility of actual weather forecasters. He peddles in weather control conspiracy theories (HAARP and “chemtrails” mostly) and tries to mimic…

Those Sounds You Hear? They Are the Death Pangs of the Religious Right

via   Those Sounds You Hear? They Are the Death Pangs of the Religious Right .

by David Harris Gershon

Originally published at Tikkun Daily

One might think, given the record number of anti-gay bills being proposed across the United States, that the religious right’s legislative influence – and cultural entrenchment – is growing. In fact, they are evidence that the exact opposite is the case.

What we are seeing right now are the last gasps of religious fundamentalism and its normative influence on the national stage. Just as an individual on his deathbed experiences a momentary flurry of energy and clarity before descending into his final end, we are witnessing the religious right’s final flailing on the national stage. To understand this, one doesn’t need to examine Pew studies on changing attitudes, nor the consolidation of religious fundamentalism into pockets of the Southeast and the West.

All one needs…

Animal Rescue Dumps Dog Back At A los Angeles Kill Shelter.

Recently there was a dog ‘rescued’ from the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys California. The Rescue who pulled the dog was Muttshack Animal Rescue.

Muttshack is run by Amanda St. John. They have a permanent adoption event location at Pet Co a store in Burbank, California. Puppy adoption in a store environment may cause people to consider taking home a puppy with the same mindset of bringing home the cat litter. Extra vigilance should be given to what the possible adopters idea is of a “life long commitment”. .

Clash Between Activists and Ranchers Over Alberta’s Wild Horse Cull Heats Up

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Jen Gerson | as published on the National Post

“It’s the cattle and the ranchers who have a lot of power and they don’t want the horses competing with the cattle for the grazing.’’

SUNDRE, Alta. — To the advocates of Alberta’s wild horse population, the only thing preventing an inhumane annual cull is a tent, coolers of food and the few dozen people who stream into a rural makeshift campsite.

This is where the most dedicated will stay, despite the arrests of five of their comrades on Tuesday.

“I think the wild horse cull is completely irresponsible,” said Shannon Mann, a horse advocate from Calgary who has taken residence in the camp for the past two weeks.

Sad News: A Cow’s End! Man’s Cruelty

The Cruelty Of Imprisoning Animals At Zoos

Ann Novek( Luure)--With the Sky as the Ceiling and the Heart Outdoors

The following article was written by Michelle Carr.

Confused Animal Lover from St. Louis writes, “I’m a huge animal lover, and I understand why the circus is bad for animals, but what about zoos?”

Great question! Many people aren’t aware of the cruelty behind zoos, so it’s good that you’re thinking about animals used for entertainment. When I was a kid, I went to the zoo all the time with my family. I loved pandas as a kid (still do!), and I thought being able to see them in person would be neat. But once I saw them “up close and personal,” I realized that the animals were miserable. It instantly became very clear to me that the animals imprisoned in zoos are sad and don’t want to be kept in artificial environments, have people gawk at them, listen to children who bang on the windows of their enclosures, or…

Chain of Hope encounters unspeakable suffering. This was one of those times.

We received yet another call from KCK from a neighbor saying that the dog next door was terribly matted. They could not find anyone to help them, return their call, etc. Thankfully, she called Chain of Hope with her concerns.  When I called her back she told me that the woman that had the dog would give it up, she was sure. I asked her what kind of dog it was and she said it was a Cocker. She said the owners were older and both of them had had cancer. The man had died not long ago and the woman currently had cancer. She said the dog had gotten put out in the back yard and basically ignored. The neighbor had put a dog house in the yard for the poor thing. He was fed pretty…
