Dog Food Logic is an indispensable book for any pet owner who wants to make thoughtful, informed decisions about what to feed his or her canine companions. The dog food industry is a bewildering, ever-changing landscape of companies and brands, and dog owners are inundated with marketing masquerading as science, with rigid advice from self-declared experts, and with fads every bit as intense and short-lived as those in the human weight loss business. While world athletes are winning medals at the 2014 Russian Winter Olympics, freestyle skier and silver medalistGus Kenworthy, from Telluride, Colorado, is winning hearts around the world. While competing in slopestyle at the Olympics, Kenworthy came across a bunch of stray puppies and their mother in Sochi, and vowed to save the little darlings, and bring them home with him.

“Oh my glob, look what I just found,” he tweets, with photos of himself, and his new found furry friends.

The 22-year-old animal lover found the four puppies and their mother, in the Olympic mountain village. “Spent all afternoon playing with a gang of stray puppies here in Sochi!” he writes on Facebook. “Looking into finding a way to bring them home with me but also don’t want to take them away from their mama because she was being super cute and protective over them,” he wrote…

Carriage Horse Controversy Extends Beyond New York City

STOP ANIMAL ABUSE

“As a life-long horse owner, I am so against this industry. No horse should be made to work up to 9 hours a day, dodging traffic, breathing in toxic fumes all day; with only 5 weeks a year at pasture…my comments are next to paragraphs I disagree with! Please sign the petitions & watch the videos at the end of this news post!”

By Pat Raia  Feb 12, 2014

While a high-profile ordinance that would ban the use of horse-drawn carriages in New York City has not yet reached the city council, the proposed legislation has drawn criticism from carriage operators as well as from a veterinarian who believes such a ban is not necessarily in the horses’ best interest.

Horse carriage owners and operators oppose such legislation on grounds that their industry is already heavily regulated, and their horses are well-protected under a current law. Photo: John Manuel/Wikimedia Commons

Feeding polar bears from a tank; ca. 1950

I hope to be remembered for my atrocities!

Russian tanks were designed to be driven with one arm.“There’s a good bear, now go and maim those Nazis on this other side of this hill.”

This is quite possibly the most Russian photograph ever taken.

Polar bears look really freaking cute, but they’re the only animal that actively predates on humans.

Wolves will give it a long and hard thought about whether they want to attack humans. Polar bears? Nope. If they see you, and you can’t protect yourself or seek shelter, you’re dead.

Dogs trafficked in Vietnam

Vietnam’s Department of Animal Health has issued a directive ordering provincial authorities to crack down on the illegal trafficking of dogs for human consumption as rabies concerns rise. The action will help put an end to the cruel and inhumane dog meat trade in this region.

The move follows a ground-breaking meeting in Hanoi last August, when members of the Asia Canine Protection Alliance met with the authorities of Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos agreed to consider a five-year moratorium on the commercial transport of dogs from one country to another. ACPA is made up of Change For Animals FoundationHumane Society International, Animals Asia and Soi Dog Foundation.

The DAH directive specifically instructs DAH sub departments to strengthen the inspection and prevention of illegal import, transport and trade of animals or animal products. The government has also instructed the…

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s move to strip gray wolves from protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is based on insufficient science, according to a report by an independent panel of scientists. In response to the report, USFWS has again opened public comment on its wolf delisting proposal until March, meaning a bit more delay before gray wolves are potentially removed from the Endangered Species List.

USFWS now expects to make its final decision on delisting the wold by the end of 2014.

In the report, produced by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UC Santa Barbara, an independent panel of wildlife biologists from universities, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Natural Resources Defense Council agree unanimously that more study is needed before the wolf is…

Understanding Dog Food Labels: Part 1

Dog Food Matters

The most difficult challenge of choosing dog food is deciphering the label. Although not perfect, the human food nutrition labels are much easier to understand than dog food labels. It is very difficult for dog owners to really find out the nutritional content of their dog food. This is the first in a series to hopefully shed some light on dog food labels.

Although not perfect, the human food nutrition labels are much easier to understand than dog food labels. It is very difficult for dog owners to really find out the nutritional content of their dog food.

The Guaranteed Analysis

The guaranteed analysis is the most basic nutritional information required for dog food packages. The regulations require that the manufacturer state the percentage of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and moisture content of the food. The notation “crude” refers to easy, imprecise analytical tests on the food.

These values do not indicate how digestible or how much will actually be absorbed in the intestines. In other words it is a measure of quantity, not quality. In fact a well-known specialty diet company…

Save the Birds

Cats have lived outdoors as part of the natural landscape for more than 10,000 years. In recent years, some people have misguidedly blamed cats for declining bird populations, but it isn’t the relationship between cats and birds that has changed—it’s the relationship between humans and the…
