Shark fin soup comes with a price. And we’re not talking the thousands people pay to eat it — we’re talking the mass killing of sharks, the disruption of our oceans’ ecosystem, and the brutal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of dolphins used by fishermen as shark bait.

Every day, hundreds of dolphins in Peru are harpooned, chopped up, and skinned alive to be used to lure sharks to boats. And despite Peru’s legislature outlawing dolphin killings in 1996, enforcement is so lax that up to 10,000 dolphins are still slaughtered every year.

Fishermen eager to cash in on shark fin soup’s popularity don’t care about these amazing creatures or the havoc they’re wreaking on the ecosystem. But if we pressure the Peruvian government to crack down and enforce its dolphin hunting ban, we can save our oceans before…

London Summit Intensifies Battle Against Wildlife Crime

Eco Books 4 Kids

Illegal wildlife items like these tiger heads are stored at the U.S. National Wildlife Property Repository in Colorado before being destroyed or used in research.

Bringing together heads of state and government ministers from 50 countries, Thursday’s high-level summit on illegal wildlife trade may represent a turning point in the fight against wildlife crime.

The London summit—hosted by the British government and led by Prime Minister David Cameron, Foreign Secretary William Hague, and Environment Secretary Owen Paterson—focuses on securing specific actions around elephants, rhinos, and tigers.

Topics being discussed include improving law enforcement and the role of the criminal justice system, reducing demand for illegal wildlife products, and supporting the development of sustainable alternative livelihoods.

Prince Charles and his son, William, the Duke of Cambridge, are attending, as are the presidents of Botswana, Chad, Gabon, and Tanzania. There is also a delegation from China.

Bird Trapped in Indoor Water Park — Please Help!

Our Compass

PETA PETA

BACKGROUND

Parrots are beautiful and highly intelligent birds. In the wild, they are never alone and will fly up to 30 miles a day through forests, foraging and exploring with their flockmates. But in captivity, they are denied the opportunity to engage in natural behavior and often become neurotic, sometimes fatally mutilating themselves.

Splash Lagoon, an indoor water park in Erie, Pennsylvania, has reportedly confined this parrot to a barren enclosure in a noisy, busy, chlorine-rich facility for years.

WHOM TO CONTACT

Please politely urge parent company Scott Enterprises to improve this parrot’s quality of life by providing him with enrichment like toys for playing, chewing, and intellectual stimulation.

Chinchali Fair: Sponsor a Bus, Spare a Bull – Animal Rahat

Life or Lunch?

Every year, thousands of people from all over the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka travel to the village of Chinchali to attend the annual fair celebrating the goddess Mayakka Devi. Entire families pile into carts pulled by bullocks, horses, and donkeys for what can be a two-day trip of hundreds of kilometres. The animals often suffer from severe thirst or lameness, and some collapse from exhaustion and despair.

Animal Rahat, a PETA-supported relief program for animals who have been forced to work, has provided aid and emergency veterinary care to animals in years past, including a phenomenally successful program that transports villagers to the fair in chartered buses. More than 600 people availed themselves of the free rides the first year that they were offered.

This year, outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have occurred in regions near the Chinchali Fair site, so Animal Rahat met with local authorities…

A popular wildlife safari park in Britain is on the receiving end of public outcry after word got out that six lions in their care have been destroyed, reported Sunday’s publication of the Daily Mail.

A lion, lioness and four cubs were destroyed at the Longleat Safari Park last month.

Officials at the zoo blame the killings on an increase in pregnancies at the park. On Sunday, the Longleat Safari Park posted this statement on their Facebook page:

In regards to the lions, there has been a large increase in pregnancies, resulting in a 40 per cent increase in population. This has unfortunately resulted in excessive violent behaviour, putting 21 of them at risk.

The park added:
