Russia has a black-market squirrel problem

Grist

Are your squirrels legal? If you bought them out of someone’s trunk or trench coat in Moscow recently, PROBABLY NOT.

“Russians have gone nuts for squirrels,” explains the Associated Press. (Dammit! They beat us to the pun.) Not content with the usual knock-off Guccis, sinister folk are swiping squirrels from Moscow parks and reselling the cute, bushy-tailed critters as pets. (Neither their meat nor fur is worth much.)

Background, Source GreenPeace

A brutal and misguided mass cull of sharks has begun in Western Australia.

All human deaths at sea are tragic — but this knee-jerk response is scientifically unproven and pushes already vulnerable species to the brink.

Let’s pile the pressure on WA Premier Colin Barnett to halt this senseless shark attack.

Ann Novek( Luure)--With the Sky as the Ceiling and the Heart Outdoors

The cockfighting industry in New York received a rude wakeup call over the weekend when authorities raided three locations where they arrested nine people on felony charges and freed 3,000 birds in what state officials called one of the largest such actions in history.

The raids began Saturday at a cockfighting event in Queens and ended on Sunday when officials went to a farm in upstate New York where fighting roosters were boarded, state Atty. Gen. Eric Schneiderman announced. The raids, dubbed “Operation Angry Birds,” were carried out by state and local police, with assistance from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“Cockfighting is a cruel, abusive and barbaric practice that tortures animals, endangers the health and safety of the public and is known to facilitate other crimes,” Schneiderman said in a prepared statement. “My office, along with our partners in law enforcement and animal…

“Look into their eyes and tell them ‘I’m sorry, you have to die, but I need to eat.’  Look into their eyes and tell them, ‘I know there is an abundance of plant-based foods I could eat, but I would still rather eat you.’  Look into their eyes and tell them, ‘I know I don’t NEED to eat you, but I am going to pay someone else to murder you anyway.’  Look into their yes and tell them, ‘I’m sorry you lived a short, enslaved, abused, and tortured life, but I don’t’ care because I am selfish.’  Look into their eyes and tell them ‘I love my cat/dog, but your life doesn’t matter much.’ Go ahead and take a look in their eyes and tell them that.”   – Jenn V Keller-Lowe
