US Pork Suppliers Ask For Improvements For Pigs After Years Of Protests By Activists

Ann Novek( Luure)--With the Sky as the Ceiling and the Heart Outdoors

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The yearslong call by animal rights groups to improve conditions on American hog farms advanced considerably this week when two of the country’s biggest meat companies urged producers to change how pregnant sows are housed, and one announced it wanted to stop the practice of killing sick or injured animals by “manual blunt force.”

Tyson Foods sent new animal welfare guidelines to its 3,000 independent hog suppliers on Wednesday — roughly six weeks after gruesome video from an Oklahoma farm showed some animals being struck with bowling balls and others being slammed onto a concrete floor. And Smithfield Foods announced Tuesday it would ask growers to move pregnant sows from gestation crates to group housing by 2022.

The change in corporate policy comes after decades of lobbying and protests from animal rights groups and a trend that saw more food retailers and restaurant chains moving away…

“A Wolf Called Storm”

Howling For Justice

I love this documentary, it originally aired under the name “Cold Warriors”.  Jeff Turner does an amazing job filming the  Delta Pack in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park. Storm is the huge alpha male, an amazing leader, along with his mate Susie. These wolves are buffalo hunters. Watching the pack in action, how well-coordinated and cooperative they are, is truly inspiring. It’s also a pleasure to see wolf pups well cared for by their family, not under the threat of brutal hunts. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing wild wolves in their natural habitat.

A warning for the squeamish, there are predation scenes throughout the documentary.  Predation is a natural part of life, benefiting both predator and prey. As apex predators, it’s the wolves’ job to cull the buffalo herds, keeping them strong.  Only the interference of man upsets that delicate balance.

What if a judge handed down a verdict without viewing all the evidence?

What if a judge handed down a verdict without viewing all the evidence?

Right now, many politicians are doing just that — deciding the fate of millions of animals while turning a blind eye to the cruelty that may await them in the live export trade. We urgently need your help to get this new evidence in their hands.

Live export is once again making headlines across the country for all the wrong reasons… We have uncovered harrowing footage — posted on YouTube — showing Australian animals being tortured and killed during the Festival of Sacrificein the Gaza Strip. When we alerted media, the live export industry swung back into damage control.

As an investigator, I’ve witnessed more cruelty than I care to admit — but ‘Gaza’ is the worst I have ever seen. Dozens of Australian bulls were…

Blood drenched horse butcher hands out cans of dog food at protest (AU)

Tuesday's Horse

Cross-posted from The International Social News Agency

Brisbane 9 January 2014. In Brisbane today, as The Magic Millions horse sale continues on the Gold Coast, a group of people who care about the welfare of horses, staged a protest.

Race horses that do not meet the racing times expected of trainers and owners are more often than not, killed with a gunshot to the head and used as pet food.

A video taken of the shooting of the horses contains an image of horses waiting to be shot trembling in fear as they know what is happening.

Animal advocates say that the breeding industry within horseracing is ultimately what drives the cycle of wastage, by churning out too many horses and not enough homes.

While millions of dollars will be spent on purchasing potential winners at the Magic Millions sales, the losers from just a few…

Google just made it so strangers can email your Gmail account – here’s how to stop them

Google on Thursday unveiled a new Gmail feature – emailing Google+ users whose email address you actually don’t know. Moving forward, Gmail will suggest Google+ connections as recipients when a user composes a new email, without revealing the recipient’s email addresses to the sender until the recipient either replies to the email or follows the sender. While some Gmail users may welcome the feature, others may see it as a privacy threat… and of course Google has enabled it by default. Thankfully, there’s a way to prevent random Google+ strangers, companies or services that may abuse this feature from emailing you using solely your social network profile.

We Are Animals and Therein Lies Hope for a Better Future

Igor Purlantov

This past year was remarkable in terms of what we have learned about the cognitive, emotional and moral lives of nonhuman animals. A new and outstanding book called We Animals by award-winning photojournalist and activist Jo-Anne McArthur whose work also is featured in the wonderful documentary The Ghosts in Our Machine and a recent TEDTalk entitled “If We Could Talk To the Animals” by biologist Denise Herzing about the clearly smart and emotional dolphins she and her team study and her talk made me think of an incredible number of larger themes and “big” questions centering on the fascinating lives of the other animals with whom we share our magnificent planet. By paying attention to who other animals are we learn lessons about ourselves.

Thousands of Prairie Dogs in Danger of Being Poisoned

Exposing the Big Game

by Alicia Graef
January 7, 2014

Animal advocates and conservationists are fighting to stop the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) from poisoning thousands of black-tailed prairie dogs who live on the Thunder Basin National Grassland in eastern Wyoming.

The prairie dog management plan was put in place years ago, setting aside 85,000 acres where prairie dogs would be protected from poisons and shooting, but complaints from ranchers have led the USFS to propose going backwards and amend the plan to allow prairie dogs to be poisoned within a quarter of a mile of private or state land.

The management strategy was originally intended to promote ecological diversity and ensure prairie dogs and other species had a safe space to live, but the new plan would in effect take away 22,000 acres of this protected land and end up killing an estimated 16,000 prairie dogs, according to a joint press release…

Bayer Is Suing Europe For Saving Bees. Sign Petition!

Ann Novek( Luure)--With the Sky as the Ceiling and the Heart Outdoors

honeybeeWow. Bayer has sued the European Commission to overturn a ban on the pesticides that are killing millions of bees around the world. A huge public push won this landmark ban only months ago — and we can’t sit back and let Big Pesticide overturn it while the bees vanish.

Bayer and Syngenta, two of the world’s largest chemical corporations, claim that the ban is “unjustified” and “disproportionate.” But clear scientific evidence shows their products are behind the massive bee die-off that puts our entire food chain in peril.

This past summer, 37 million bees were discovered dead on a single Canadian farm. And unless we act now, the bees will keep dying. We have to show Bayer now that we won’t tolerate it putting its profits ahead of our planet’s health. If this giant corporation manages to bully Europe into submission, it would spell disaster for the bees.
